Band Bio

Triply Landlocked band Steve Hoiberg David Fleming Spike Bradford

Triply Landlocked is an exploratory collaboration comprised of veteran Omaha musicians, lyrical artists, and hobbyists David Fleming (guitar, vocals, lyrics, sausage), Steve Hoiberg (banjo, lyrics, flowers), Hal Cottrell (mandolin, vocals, lyrics, dog fostering) and Spike Bradford (bass, lyrics, meteorology) steeped in the roots of traditional bluegrass and roots music with focused attention on expansion through their unique tapestry of original music and incorporation of other genres both logical and seemingly illogical. Combined, this diverse collective brings a fresh perspective on traditional stylings to the Omaha and regional music scene by rarely wavering from the creative journey that has led them to evolving destinations past, present and, optimistically, future.

As one of their originals eloquently states, there’s “Only three ways to get to water,” and Triply Landlocked is forever intent on meandering each and every fertile pathway (with instruments as divining rods in hand) towards the end goal of discovering new sounds as fluid and life affirming as the aforementioned liquid.

What’s in a name? Being from Nebraska, the group sought a moniker both reflective and representative of their homeplace, and fortunately (or unfortunately) Nebraska is the only state in the union that is three states away from an ocean, bay or peninsula. While this is not necessarily something to brag about, it is certainly as unique as Triply Landlocked the band! And for those fans who might worry that such a distinction connotes a certain dryness, we do have the tumultuous, unpredictable Missouri River flowing through our collective backyard which is a much more apt metaphor for the music! “Atlantic I’ve been stranded in Missouri, caught in Texas, Gulf of Mexico, Hudson Bay a tryst with two Dakotas, headed west Wyoming Idaho”

Water is essential, but it also certainly has its perils (jellyfish, submerged logs, rip tides, raw sewage, tugboat captains, etc.). Salt breezes and skipping over ripples in a pimped-out pontoon aside, human nature suggests that we all eventually yearn for a return to something slightly more stable, like the shore. In seeing Triply Landlocked live (recommended) or by listening to one of their recordings, you’ll soon come to the hunter-gatherer realization that there’s “No need for a boat ‘cause on land you’ll stay afloat”. Triply Landlocked…just enough to “keep you stoned and dry”!
